CITADEL - **  Watchable, scary in parts, but lacking in nuance.

THE BAY - ***  Fun found-footage thriller about a mysterious bacteria in the Chesapeake Bay. By turns gory and heartbreaking, and also terrifying.

SKYFALL - ****  Just awesome.

Tree fell outside my building last night. Hurricane survivor, and can’t handle a little snow. Not impressed.

Padgett Powell’s rules on “What Writing Should Do,” printed in the back of The Interrogative Mood.

Padget was the teacher of some of my favorite writers, including Chris Adrian and Maud Newton.
